Installment Three - June 16, 2003

[The "L" truck, AKA trailermobile] We were rudely awoken at 6:00. By 7:05, we were on the road again heading towards Dodge City, which was more like a group of shacks, in Kansas. How will we define Kansas?
  • Miles and miles of endless fields of waves of grain
  • As we sang our favorite song God Bless the USA, we wondered how Kansas got included
  • Glorified grouping of Granaries
  • Railroad tracks -- coming from and going to nowhere
  • It's not the destination, and we know why

We arrived in Dodge City after 580 painful miles. At the campground, there was a lake, which had a film of slime covering the top. No one opted to swim, however most took the first, and probably last, showers of the trip. We headed into Dodge City -- home of legendary cowboy lore -- on a large amount of cumulative horsepower, in our Class A uniforms, wondering if we would ever spy the other sex again, since cows don't count. We went to the chuck wagon dinner. After the dinner, we attended the famous, world-renowned Dodge City re-created gunfight. Then, we headed into the Long Branch Saloon for the variety show -- the highlight of the day. While driving across the great plains of Kansas, and reviewing many of the entertainment opportunities on billboards, The Long Branch Saloon Variety Show, starring Miss Kitty, reeled us right in. Miss Kitty, who had an awesome voice and a wonderful personality, in the estimation of our troop, probably didn't miss too many cracker barrels. The troop was regaled with a can-can dance by the only three hot women in the state of Kansas. Garter belts were sold right off the legs of these women to only two takers in our troop: Denver and Matt W. The bartenders (sarsaparilla only) and the bar maids entertained us with old western theme songs revolving around our crews' dream: Love. In that regard, the singers challenged the audience with a happy birthday message, and Denver, while 10 days early, took the bait. He ended up on stage, sufficiently embarrassed (and turning a crimson red), in front of the entire audience.

We finished our 90 degree day off with scout football back at camp and a father's day church service with a special western blessing for us all.
